History

Bridge Rd is Classified as a heritage area it’s history dates back to 1837. Just two years after the European settlement of the colony of Victoria. The first land sales in the area took place on August 1st, 1839.

Shortly after buildings were erected along the street. The many clothes shops and cafes that now exist were once hay and corn stores, groceries, tinsmiths, hotels, factories and butchers to surgeries.

Take a stroll down Bridge Rd and relive the history of the area. Historical plaques are placed on many of Bridge Rds buildings and the larger signs give you a glimpse into the development of a street with a long history. Whilst the walk is not designed to take a specific direction, it starts from the corner of Hoddle and Bridge Rd.
